Spanish High School Diploma (Bachillerato)

What is it and how long does it last?

This programme improves on your general education and offers comprehensive academic training to continue on to higher education at university or VET level.

It runs for two academic years with 30 class hours per week in the first year and 32 in the second.

Structure and Branches

In accordance with the new education act (LOMLOE), there are four diploma branches:

Arts

If you are interested in the arts (audiovisual, graphic, design, media, advertising, performing, production and management of businesses in the cultural sector, or cultural and social promotion), this branch is for you. It offers two pathways:

  • Art, image and design
  • Music and performing arts.

Science and Technology

If you are interested in experimental sciences, mathematics, science and health, technology and the production of goods and services, this branch is for you.

General

If you are undecided on which academic pathway to choose or if you plan to take a university or higher VET degree with an interdisciplinary approach, this branch is for you. It provides you with the possibility of including subjects from different branches (Arts, Science and Technology, Humanities and Social Sciences) with more flexible overarching learning.

Humanities and Social Sciences

If you are intrigued by language and literary studies, philosophy, social, legal, political and economic sciences, public or private management and administration, communication, public relations, publicity, or tourism and other leisure services, this is the branch for you. It offers two pathways:

  • Humanities
  • Social Sciences.

Each year comprises:

  • Common subjects: five subjects and a high school research project
  • Branch subjects: three subjects according to the selected diploma branch
  • Optional subjects: one free elective selected by students.

You may view the subjects in each branch at the following link (Regional Department of Education and Vocational Training)

Important Advice

It is advisable to carefully consider the diploma type that best matches what you want to study afterwards and your professional interests, in order to maximise entry and admission.

If you are thinking about taking higher VET after your high school diploma, please check the preferential diploma type for each VET programme on the following website <fp.caib.es>, in the following section Pas de batxillerat a CFGS

If after finishing your high school diploma, you want to study a university degree, it is also advisable to carefully select your subjects in the second year that may help raise your admission grade. You may find out about these subjects by checking the weighting parameters at the university where you wish to study. Remember that you should start as you mean to go on in your first year and aim for top marks, as the record from both years of the diploma has a 60% weighting in the final mark of the university entrance exam (PBAU).

And Afterwards?

After passing your diploma, what can you do?*
