What comes after primary education?

After finishing the primary education stage, pupils move into the first year of obligatory secondary education.

Obligatory secondary education (ESO) is a free mandatory stage of basic education and comprises four academic years normally between the ages of 12 to 16.

Obligatory secondary education aims to:

  • Provide students with core elements of culture: humanities, arts, science and technology
  • Ensure students develop and consolidate study and work habits
  • Prepare students so they can take further studies or move into employment
  • Educate all students so they may exercise their rights and duties as citizens.
